Sunshine House Inc. Announces Expanded Services: Sunflower Cottage Scheduled to Open Late Summer 2016
Sunshine House Inc. has long been known as a service provider for individuals with developmental disabilities. Whether it has been through job placements, work services or adult day services, providing support and care to meet a high level of expectations has always been one of our hallmarks.
As we grow into our 45th year of service we look towards tomorrow and how we can further serve the needs and demographics of our beloved Door County. After much study and community conversation, the Board of Directors of Sunshine House has decided to take a service that we are already providing, adult day care, and to expand that beyond those with developmental disabilities to include those with Alzheimer’s, dementia, Parkinson’s, arthritis, stroke-related memory loss, cognitive impairment, the medically frail and seniors in general who are looking for a community to belong to.
Door County’s demographics show that this is an area that will continue to see an increase in need for services as our population continues to age and we become more and more of a retirement community for individuals throughout the Midwest. Nearly 25% of Door County’s population is people 65 and older. This segment of the population is projected to exceed 40% by the year 2040 in Door County.
As a part of this expansion of services our facility will be undergoing a 4-phase series of construction and remodeling so that we have a specific space we can offer to this new clientele. We truly see this as a Life Enrichment Program that will focus on providing a meaningful day through individualized care. It will also serve as a respite program for caregivers who need a break, but want the confidence of knowing that the loved ones they have dedicated their time and efforts to caring for, are in good hands.
Sunflower Cottage, our new Adult Enrichment Day Program will be housed under the Sunshine House Inc. roof and will be utilizing some resources from the current Sunshine House Inc. program. The space, however, will be completely separate from our current program, including a separate entrance, kitchen, bathroom and activity centers. It will be a homelike center where our clients can feel a high level of familiarity and comfort.
We are looking to open Sunflower Cottage in our updated and remodeled space late in the summer of 2016.
